Low-cost impedance-based metal corrosion detector

Project Lead: Jiajun Li

The corrosion of metal materials will reduce its structural strength. Therefore, corrosion will cause unnecessary economic losses and environmental pollution. The occurrence of corrosion can be explained by observing the degradation of certain metal structures. However, to quantitatively analyze the mechanism of corrosion chemical reactions, it is necessary to use instruments to accurately analyze the severity of corrosion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis can achieve the purpose. The idea is to transform the electrochemical reaction system into an equivalent circuit whose impedance spectrum characteristics are the same as those of the electrochemical reaction sample to be studied. Therefore, it is very important to obtain the impedance spectrum of the electrochemical reaction sample experimentally. Researchers can use the software to fit the data obtained using EIS and quickly analyze corrosion conditions

Many research groups have studied the corrosion of metal materials, but use large EIS instruments to test and measure samples. In order to make the impedance measurement equipment miniaturized, it becomes essential. In this project, we proposed a low-cost corrosion monitoring system that can be deployed on site.
