Novel platform for massive Single Cell RNA Sequencing
Project Lead: Lukas Menze
Single cell separation and subsequent sequencing provide highly accurate and reliable results regarding the genetic information of an individual cell. The aim of this project is to develop a novel portable platform technology based on nanofabricated and microfluidic 3D structures in combination with impedance spectroscopy for efficient single cell filtering and sequencing. Emphasis is on the separation and sequencing of cell types important for cancer research, namely circulating tumor cells and stem cells.
Colorimetric Sensor Development
Gareth is one of three research-based Master’s students working on the sensor development project. The device that is being developed will be able to measure a patient’s metabolite concentrations by observing specific colour changes in chemical reactions involving their bodily fluids. This measure of metabolite concentrations has proven to be a useful metric for early detection of colon cancer and the sensor development project aims to make this data more accessible to everyone. More specifically, Gareth will be researching the microfluidic components required for performing the needed chemical reactions to detect the patient’s metabolite concentrations. Currently, Gareth is aiding in the development of the device hardware and power circuitry [see photo].
